The Design Story: Kai Tak Sports Park

Hear from the Project Lead for Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park, James Pearce. Pearce, of world-leading design firm Populous, will share the design story behind the 28ha site. When it opens in 2023, Kai Tak Sports Park will set the benchmark for entertainment and recreation precincts worldwide: the integration of world class sports facilities, retail, wellness and community leisure spaces will create an urban oasis and iconic destination for visitors and the local community. Pearce will share imagery not yet released to the public, along with insights into the impact this massive park and civic infrastructure will have on the wider community.

Joining James will be Michael Camerlengo, co-chair of the Construction Property & Infrastructure Committee and advisor to the Government on the strategy and procurement of the Park.

Since joining Populous in 2010, James has worked on projects around the globe including the International Convention Centre (ICC) Sydney, Philippine Arena in Manila, Datong Sports Park in China, KL Sports City in Malaysia and Queenstown Convention Centre in New Zealand. James also worked on the design of the Los Angeles Convention Centre working in Populous’ Kansas City office.

 

James is passionate about fostering the culture of Populous, in particular driving innovation in design and knowledge management across offices, studios and teams.


In 2016, James was awarded the QBM Griffith University MBA Responsible Leadership Scholarship, allowing him to broaden his skills in team leadership and responsible design.


Michael Camerlengo
Partner, Head of Infrastructure | KPMG

Michael is a Partner, Head of Infrastructure for Hong Kong and Head of Government for Asia Pacific at KPMG. Michael was the lead advisor to the Government of Hong Kong on commercial and financial matters related to the strategy and procurement of Kai Tak Sports Park between 2015 and 2018. Michael advises clients primarily in respect of major infrastructure and capital projects across the Asia Pacific region. This extends to advising on project strategy, financial and commercial structuring, contract development and restructuring, project tendering and overall transaction advice. Michael has advised on over 20 successfully closed major projects of collective capital value greater than USD8bn across the health, sports, water, power, rail, ports, logistics and commercial real estate sectors. Michael’s clients include central and local government bodies across Asia Pacific as well as many of the most prominent private sector investors, developers, and operators of major infrastructure assets across the region.
